Where you know the Wiz and Dreamgirls, I know all too well the songbook of the American Musical from the last, oh, 30 years. Particularly the songs of Sondheim. ("Valjean, at last, we see each other plain," anyone...?) I have seen probably, eh, 50 (give or take) pudgy black girls audition with that song over the years and so, for reasons very different than yours, I know it all too well. And I hate it. A lot. Doesn't matter where you lived or your socioeconomic status, if you're black and were born between 1970 and 1990, you know all the music to "The Wiz," you've got an unconscious urge to leave your parents alone if you hear Barry White, Al Green or Isaac Hayes... and you know the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack like you're part of the original cast. Thus, although I hate the song, I know it BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS. Man, oh man, the sentiment is utterly galling. And, yet, I can't stop humming it once it's in my head.
