Scrambled Eggs

I sometimes have incredibly busy days that still manage to leave me with the feeling of having not accomplished a thing. Yesterday was one of those days. To console myself today, I’m making a list of what I did manage to accomplish yesterday, even if it wasn’t what was on my list:

  • Did the dishes;
  • Vacuumed downstairs;
  • Registered Fraction and I for our classes at the hospital (childbirth, newborn care, infant CPR and breastfeeding);
  • Wrote to a bunch of doulas;
  • Scheduled interviews with 4 of them;
  • Wrote to Fraction’s dad and sent him photocopies of the plans for my dream workbench for the garage;
  • Answered a buttload of e-mails;
  • Watched the garage fail inspection;
  • Corresponded with the builders about what happens now and who owes who how much;
  • Worked through part of one of the stacks on my desk;
  • E-mailed Dudu about what we’re going to use for a changing table;
  • Talked to the handyman about the backyard fence and the nursery ceiling;
  • Drew up and sent out a bunch of invoices;
  • E-mailed for info about pre-natal yoga classes in the area; and
  • Worked on 30 Days of Night: Eben & Stella.

What didn’t happen yesterday:

  • Applejack and Claude did not get a second walk (for which I am paying a price this morning);
  • Let’s be honest: a shower;
  • Taxes (!!);
  • Black Cat.

Sorry for all the pregnancy stuff. We passed into the second trimester the day after Nana died so, as you might imagine, our minds were otherwise occupied and there was little fanfare. You’re never really safe — something could go wrong at any point in any pregnancy — but we’re through the window of when most miscarriages happen and stand a really good chance of carrying to term now. So we’ve got permission to do all the things we haven’t allowed ourselves to do for the last few months — tell people, shop for baby, think about the nursery, knit baby clothes (!!), schedule classes… make plans, essentially. Of course, I’m three weeks behind on work (and physically exhausted), so I don’t have the time or energy to dive into it with verve, but there are a few things I’d like to set in motion.

Anyway. We’re 16 weeks along as of today.

Check out my cheesy web toy:

So. On to today’s priorities!

  • Uh… shower;
  • Go to Bella Napoli to work on 30 Days and Black Cat;
  • Tonight: start taxes; and
  • Date night.

Okay, getting started…

    I was wondering if you had started on the baby clothes yet…by the way, I need to hit the yarn store when Greg and I come in a couple of weeks. Maybe we can make a date?

  • Adrian says:

    You need to tell me if you’re willing to hand wash baby clothes.

    Wheeeee!

  • kellysue says:

    Jennifer — It’s a date.

    Adrian — Yes ma’am!

  • Carey says:

    I knew I shouldn’t have forgotten to read your blog. I JUST found out about the baby-news. Congrats!

    I’m just about to hit 6 months myself… crazy-fun! It’s been kind of a dream pregnancy, no real morning sickness or anything. Just growin’ a human being… :)

  • Drew says:

    Oh, the taxes. The Taxes! We went with a CPA this year, since we don’t know from business expenses, and we got the completed forms back in the mail yesterday. Let’s just say we could have bought a car with what we owe, between my freelancing and the illustration stuff. And I’m talking a daily-use-for-five-ten years used car, not like a single-serving one-road-tripper.

    Sigh. This year, quarterly estimated all the way.

  • kellysue says:

    Carey — Congratulations!

    Drew — Oh, oooouch.

    Okay, when ARE you going to have a shower? Susan and I want to send stuff.

    She is biting at the bit to buy baby clothes which I told her might have to wait until he shows up. (positive, supportive thinking) However, if you have any pre-delivery baby clothes needs, please advise.

    And seriously, what do you need? If a big gift card is something you’d like, that’s fine. If you need to get some baby furniture, that works, too.

    I’m want to make a baby book/photo album for you, but want to make it to YOUR specs. Let’s talk in about a month so I can make it like you want.

    RE: Taxes. With Susan’s startup costs last year we’re getting a nice refund. For a change. It’s such a nice refund she doen’t want to send it in. “They’ll never believe us, they’ll audit our ass for sure…” Well, she didn’t say “ass” but she is actually a bit paranoid about getting OUR money back.

    RE: “Date Night.” That made this old man smile.

    I wonder if there’s a small business opportunity (like on the order of a high school babysitter) for someone to help pregnant couples get shit done, like walk dogs and clean the house.

  • kellysue says:

    Terry — I expect we’ll do a baby registry at some point, but that require more research than I have time for at the moment, alas. Like, I know I want a jogger for a stroller, but I have no idea which one. No idea how to choose a carseat, either. We have gotten a crib and Dudu’s buying us a changing table, so I think that sort of furniture is covered. Have you seen the plethora of highchairs out there? Check this selection out:

    …by the time you figure in budget and design it’s like solving some kind of algebra problem. Right now, I’m favoring the IKEA Antilop or the Tripp Trapp, but who knows? There’s a $180 difference between the two.

    And I have found reason to want THREE DIFFERENT DIAPER BAGS. One is about $30, another, $170.

    And let’s not even start talking about diapering dilemmas… Oy.

  • kellysue says:

    Jon — there are post-partum doulas who do that sort of thing AFTER the baby comes, but I don’t know of anyone who makes a practice of helping prepare for the baby domestically. Like a wedding planner — but for a baby. That’s a good idea.

  • Mike says:

    Congratualtions!

    My wife is due in May, so we have planned our butts off lately.

    Speaking of doulas, my mother-in-law is a birth doual here in town if you don’t have one in mind, http://www.mamasara.com

    “We passed into the second trimester”

    Congrats! That’s exciting.

  • DavePress says:

    In the mean time, since we’re talking babies. Here’s my God Son, Jude Russell Brearton:

  • martha says:

    Oh, congratulations Kelly Sue!! That’s wonderful! You’re gonna have the most stylin’ kid around. Can’t wait till you start posting baby’s daily wardrobe on flickr. The mind boggles…

  • kellysue says:

    Mike — Congratulations! And weirdly, we already have an appt for a consultation with your mother-in-law on Tuesday…

  • kellysue says:

    Dawn — Thanks!

    Dave — I commented on Flickr, but I’ll say it here too: he’s a cutie.

    Martha — I’ve already started to obsess…

  • T2 says:

    The Tripp Trapp is cool. Susan and I think that is the one. It “grows” with the munchkin. PLUS, it just looks champion.

  • Heidi M. says:

    Yay! A little Fraction-DeConnick! Very happy for you both.

  • Mike says:

    Yep, I’d say that is pretty darn weird. But wonderful, too.

  • Michael May says:

    You’re making me flashback to all the hospital classes and furniture buying that we did when our son was born.

    Those are wonderful memories; I’m so happy and excited for you guys.

  • re: breastfeeding

    Apologies if I talked about this before, but how crazy is it that you have to learn how to do that? Its so basic, you would think it would come naturally. Could of knocked me over with a feather when I first found out it’s a learned skill.
