Happy New Year’s Metacognition
- How many feeds do you have in your reader? Mine’s so bloated I actually avoid opening it. I’m thinking of pruning it to a deliberate number, like… 50.
- If anyone wants a Rue La La or a Fictionaut invite, hit me up.
- I have 11.5 oz of Valrhona white chocolate I’d forgotten about. What should I do with it?
- Rebecca and Ryan’s HAPPY NEW BEARD card is possibly the greatest bit of print since the Constitution. I miss them.
- Did I accomplish anything in 2008? It doesn’t feel like it.
- I live in a state of constant battle between my inner recycler/crafter/poor person (“Don’t throw out those empty plastic film canisters, we can make something neat with them!”) and my inner realist/declutterer (“When exactly? And what? Who wants something made out of empty film canisters…?”).
- I can’t believe Nick and Nora don’t make flannel pajamas for men. All of the flannel pjs I can find for dudes… suck. Hunting plaids and solids. Nothing fun.
- HL watched either watched too much TV yesterday or he nursed the coffee right out of me. Whatever it was, there was no getting him to sleep last night. This morning he’s begging for BLUE’S CLUES. It’s breaking my heart but he must be denied.
- I hate the title — Preggatinis
— but Laurenn pointed this out and it’s brilliant.
- I need, like, three more of these.
- Another interesting link from Laurenn: My Daughters/My Self.

You’re denying him Blue’s Clues? What, is it a Joe-only marathon?
(We’ve been watching “Bob the Builder” and “Harold & the Purple Crayon” most of the day. I’m convinced he’s smart enough that if the tv rots part of his brain, he’ll still be okay).
And how is it I’ve never even SEEN that storables web site before? Goodbye, afternoon…
I am with you! I searched all over my Target for men’s Nick and Nora’s and couldn’t find a thing!
What is up with that? Maybe we could design a men’s line for them.
I was pretty surprised to see I had 148 subscriptions. I would say less than 50 update regularly, though.
re: clutter vs. depression era crafter/hoarder. I have had the same inner dialogue regarding the empty film canisters before. I am convinced I can make an awesome stamp roll dispenser, but really, who needs it? When would I make it? There are other logistical things to consider, also, I only personally use stamps in sheet form, because I like Eames and Bette Davis type stamps as opposed to flags. So yes, throw them away. And so many other things as well. Do I need to come over and help? I am good at throwing out other people’s stuff (just not my own).
Also, if I had the white chocolate, I’d slowly hack away at it bit by bit, ounce by ounce and eat it just the delicious way it is until there was none left. But I have no self control.
I’ve cleaned out the studio of a lot of stuff and given it away, but I must have seven dozen unfinished projects. I made a promise to not buy another art and/or craft supply thingie until I whittle it down to only two dozen. That’s a bit freeing and I’ve actually had a good time monkeying with the stuff I forgot I bought. Of course, it’s only the 3rd day of the year, so that’s easy to do. So far…the day is still young.
I know a lot of folks can’t get rid of books, but unless I know for certain that I will re-read the sucker, I’ve been mailing them to others. Shipping away clutter makes me feel a little less wasteful.
Regarding the Preggatinis book…
Don’t mean to name-drop, but I know the author, Natalie Bovis-Nelsen, through my cocktail blogging. Met her at Tales of the Cocktail in NOLA last year. She’s really sweet, and although I don’t have her book, I’ve followed her Preggatinis blog, and she has some good recipes.
Whenever Jen and I have hosted parties, we’ve always wanted to have sans-booze options available and we’ve always wanted them to be creative and tasty. There are many reasons this is just good hosting. So although I myself will probably never be pregnant, I still want to get Natalie’s book for new ideas.
i’m not sure what you meant by “interesting”, but the ‘my daughters’ column had me nauseous. i couldn’t finish it. i might even put some $ on one of those girls cutting themselves before graduating high school. i wish this was better written, and it’s only tangentially related but i just sent this to shawn:
