What I Want For My Birthday.

I have so many things. I don’t need other people to buy me things. Really. I’m set.

But you know what I would like? If you have the time or inclination, I would like lists.

I am a great lover of lists.

I did this once before—for my 29th, I think?—in lieu of gifts I collected lists from my friends. My beau at the time put them in a lovely little binder… a lovely little binder that somehow got misplaced in the move, alas. I loved my little book of lists and I’d like to replace it.

So here’s the thing: if you have a moment and you’re inspired to play (perhaps you’re on deadline, hm?) take a sheet of paper and number it 1-40 and make me a list. I don’t care what the category is. It can be related to me like:

40 Things Kelly Sue Should Do Before She Turns 50; or

40 Names for the Color Red*

…or it could be completely unrelated to me, like, say:

40 Things on My Desk;

40 Female Villains Whose Motivation Was Not Unrequited Love;

40 Photos of Ann-Margaret; or

40 Things I Made Up About Hemingway; or

40 Badass Girl Fights in Comics and Film; or whatever.

Email it to me at the address in the sidebar. I’ll post the lists here and I’ll print them out for my little book.

Thank you.

*29 Shades of Red was one of my favorite lists from the first book.

So, as near as I can tell, our Baby Mod Roxanne Crib is part of the widespread recall of drop-side cribs. I tweeted this morning that I was angry about that and I want to clarify–I’m not angry that the cribs are being recalled. Mistakes are made–they’re trying to correct the mistake and insure that everyone is safe. Great! No problem. I can work with that.

What’s making me angry is how hard I’m having to work to determine if our crib is part of the recall. (I’ve got two kids, a house and a business to run–I need anther project like the proverbial hole in the head.) Apparently the Baby Mod cribs are manufactured by Million Dollar Baby–the thing is, there’s no manufacturer listed on the Wal-Mart site (and, as of 9:17am PST, still no word about the recall). I was completely confused as to whether “Baby Mod” was a manufacturer/brand or a collection. The Baby Bargains Book Blog post (which it took far too long to find–I’ll spare you the details of that search) lead me to Google “Million Dollar Baby” + “Crib recall” + “Roxanne” … which turned up the CPS page where our crib (again–I think! Our crib is “hidden hardware” and looks exactly like the black crib that’s pictured, save that ours is in white) is listed:

Anastasia M4801
Annabelle 5901 / 5941
Kendall W5921
Kirsten M5941
Leonardo 3101
Michelangelo 3401
Robin M6001
Roxanne M5921 / 5941

So… assuming our crib is the Roxanne that’s listed, what do we do?

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and contact Million Dollar Baby for a free repair kit that will immobilize the drop side. In the meantime, find an alternate, safe sleeping environment for the child, such as a bassinet, play yard or toddler bed depending on the child’s age. Repair kits will be available to consumers within a few weeks.

All right. Deep breath and reality check: while Tallulah gets more use out of the crib than her brother did, she doesn’t spend the night there–she’s either with me overnight or in her co-sleeper. When she is in her crib, one of us is usually in the room with her folding clothes, restocking diapers or doing whatever we’re doing that requires both hands. So how concerned do we really need to be? Not very. I’ll make it clear to everyone watching the kids that they’re not to be left in the crib unattended and I’ll still pursue getting the repair kit just to be safe.

I’ve calmed down considerably since my initial tweet, but really? If they weren’t so deliberately sketchy with information about who manufactures what, it would have saved me a good 45 minutes this morning, which would have gone a long way in goodwill toward both Wal-Mart and Baby Mod/Million Dollar Baby.

Yeesh.

[I know there are people who object to what they see as the crass commercialism of the notion of "push presents." They are welcome to their opinion. And they should feel free to post it elsewhere.]

When Henry Leo was born, Fraction gave me an engagement ring. (Sure, we’d already been married for 5 years, but we didn’t have the means for a ring when we were properly engaged. He proposed with a spoon ring that his uncle made for his father and that his father gave to him. I gave it back to him on our wedding day and he still wears it today.) The gift was at once a congratulations, a celebration, a thank you, the fulfillment of a promise and an expression of love and I treasure it light years beyond its monetary value.

He surprised me last night with another gift, the occasion for which is a celebration of the birth of our daughter… albeit, a little early. It’s an antique typewriter–a 1955 pink portable Smith Corona–and it’s just about the most perfect thing I can imagine. I could spell out for you all of the reasons, the many messages embodied by this one gift, but the sap factor of this post is already alarmingly high and besides–I’ll cry.

Anyway, it’s beautiful and wonderful and I love it and I wanted to show you.

…And now I must get back to work.

We have some small appliances that have ‘given up the ghost’–two space heaters and a floor lamp. How do we dispose of these things? Can we donate them to a charity that might be able to fix them, or do we put them in the garbage…? Is there a monthly “Bulky Pickup” trash day, like there was in KC?

I want a small jade plant for my office. Where best to buy one?

Does anyone know of a place offhand that sells Trapp candles? I’m “craving” a Bob’s Flower Shop candle to fend off the dog fart stench in my office.

Hm. I feel like I must have at least a dozen more, but that’ll do for now. Any help appreciated!

Only I didn’t. Instead I dreamt (dreamed?) that Fraction and I, Henry and our friend Eleanor were on a river cruise through some unnamed European city. We’d forgotten to reserve a cabin and weren’t sure where or how we were going to sleep when we were called to meet the boat’s Captain.

Because I was an Olympic silver-medalist in “Costumed 100 Meter Freestyle (Open Water),” they were providing us with a free room. Of course, if I would participate in an exhibition swim later in the day, they’d be appreciative.

Luckily, I’d packed my Iron Man costume.
