Lisa Frank, why have you forsaken me?

Dear Diary,

Cloud hanging over the house, but felt good to be back at my desk. Many pages written today. If I can keep my eyes open after the kids go to bed, I will finish this thing tonight and start the next tomorrow.  If not, I’ll finish tomorrow for sure.

With the kids both in school now it feels like My Real Life starts this week.

I feel guilty for even thinking that.  You know what I mean though, right?  I’ve missed regular working hours and despite being desperately in love with my babies, the stress of carving out work time (coupled with travel and illness in the family) has had my stomach in knots.

Still haven’t attended to the stack of mail that came in while I was gone, but one thing at a time.  Henry’s birthday presents are ordered–right under the wire.  And both kids are happy and healthy and beautiful.  So I’m clearly not the WORST mom ever.

Wow. Confessional much?  If only I had a background of unicorns and rainbows and a little gold key for this post.

xxx,

Whatnot…

  • Alisa and I stopped at Kate Spade on our way to see SALT Saturday night (SALT was awful, by the way. I’m convinced the test audiences doomed it and there’s a good cut floating around somewhere.  There were too many terrifically talented people involved for that movie to have been that bad.)  I fell in love with the bow ring and the Jocelyn shades.  I’m still greedily clinging to my birthday day money, but when I’m ready to spend, these are an option.

  • Shaun White is coming to PDX for the Dew Tour.  DUDE.
  • Hey, if I want to go see dance in Portland, where do you recommend I go?  Is there a local contemporary company I should follow?  A venue that hosts tours?  How’s the Oregon ballet?
  • I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a performance called (I think) CARCASS that I saw in Austin years ago.  The choreographer was Llory Wilson.  I googled to see where she was and what she was up to and didn’t really come up with an answer, BUT–I did find that her troupe used to be called the “Tallulah Dance Company,” which pleased me greatly.

What I Want For My Birthday.

I have so many things.  I don’t need other people to buy me things.  Really.  I’m set.

But you know what I would like?  If you have the time or inclination, I would like lists.

Crib Recall

24.06.2010
16:34

So, as near as I can tell, our Baby Mod Roxanne Crib is part of the widespread recall of drop-side cribs.  I tweeted this morning that I was angry about that and I want to clarify–I’m not angry that the cribs are being recalled.  Mistakes are made–they’re trying to correct the mistake and insure that everyone is safe.  Great!  No problem.  I can work with that.

Present from Fraction

Present from Fraction, originally uploaded by Kelly Sue.

[I know there are people who object to what they see as the crass commercialism of the notion of "push presents." They are welcome to their opinion. And they should feel free to post it elsewhere.]

When Henry Leo was born, Fraction gave me an engagement ring. (Sure, we’d already been married for 5 years, but we didn’t have the means for a ring when we were properly engaged. He proposed with a spoon ring that his uncle made for his father and that his father gave to him. I gave it back to him on our wedding day and he still wears it today.) The gift was at once a congratulations, a celebration, a thank you, the fulfillment of a promise and an expression of love and I treasure it light years beyond its monetary value.

He surprised me last night with another gift, the occasion for which is a celebration of the birth of our daughter… albeit, a little early. It’s an antique typewriter–a 1955 pink portable Smith Corona–and it’s just about the most perfect thing I can imagine. I could spell out for you all of the reasons, the many messages embodied by this one gift, but the sap factor of this post is already alarmingly high and besides–I’ll cry.

Anyway, it’s beautiful and wonderful and I love it and I wanted to show you.

…And now I must get back to work.
