Black Cat in Top Ten

Check it out: BLACK CAT is #9 on ICv2′s Top 10 manga properties of 2006 list. Go team us!

Via blog@Newsarama.

Also!  Publisher’s Weekly has a list of February’s Comics Bestsellers and Black Cat vol. 6 is number 5.  (The list says volume 16, but it’s a typo.)  February 7th and the bestsellers list is already out.  Weird, huh?  I imagine this is another reminder that in comics the reader isn’t the consumer; the consumer is the retail establishment.  It’s been explained to me a dozen times, but it still strikes me as odd.

Shop Updated… Sort of.

I did a quick and dirty update of the amazon store this morning. There are now category pages for my work, books and music produced by my friends and family and a catchall page for miscellaneous goodies I hold dear, media I’m currently consuming, products I’ve mentioned on this blog and/or whatever shiny baubles I happen to fancy.

I still need to go through and make notes on, well, most of the titles, but as usual I’m on a deadline crunch and I can’t squeeze it in right now.

Aldous Huxley, novelist (1894-1963):

I met, not long ago, a young man who aspired to become a novelist. Knowing that I was in the profession, he asked me to tell him how he should set to work to realize his ambition. I did my best to explain. ‘The first thing,’ I said, ‘is to buy quite a lot of paper, a bottle of ink, and a pen. After that you merely have to write.’

From today’s AWAD.

I’b thick. By nothe ib all clobbed up an I cand breabe.

You get the idea. I’ve got a bajillion things to do today and a throbbing headache that urges me to curl up with NyQuil. Send pity.

Quick Miscellany:

  • Currently working on Black Cat v.10 and the 30 Days project with Niles and Randall. Ivan, I haven’t forgotten you.
  • Got a lovely inquiry/blast from the past off the PW interview. Cross your fingers for me; this could be cool if I can find a few extra hours in the day. (Who needs clean laundry?)
  • There’s a preview of Fraction and Brubaker’s Iron Fist up on Newsarama. Go check it out.
  • Speaking of clean laundry, the newly-established girl farts book club is reading and discussing House Works this holiday season. If you could use a little help around the house, pick up a copy and join our thread on the girl farts vox page. If this works out well, maybe it’ll be an ongoing thing.
  • Hillary wrote to ask me where the uberlist central page was. It’s right here.
  • Theron Neel sent me this link from You Tube-esque metacafe: Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva Masterpiece. Gorgeous. Thanks, Theron.
  • I’m off to make myself some soup.

As for the future of “30 Days of Night” in comics, Steve, what’s the story there?

SN: There are all sorts of plans. The plans are, well, I guess this will be a premature sneak of sorts, but Kelly Sue DeConnick and I are doing a six-issue series simply called “Eben and Stella.” It will start one page after “Dark Days” and end at the beginning of “Return to Barrow.” It’s a story that documents what happened to them from the end of Dark Days on. I’m really excited about that.

Mwoo ha ha etc.

  • “VERY EXCITING NEW PROJECT.” Started researching and outlining Very! Exciting! New! Project! and should start scripting today. I have to have 3 22-page scripts turned in before it’s announced, so can’t talk to much about it at this point. Still: very! exciting!
  • BLACK CAT. Wrapped up the adaptation of the first half of Vol. 5 earlier this week. Viz tells me Vol. 1 is selling well and I’m most pleased to hear it. My editor, Frances Wall (ed., DOUBT!!) has been promoted (Congratulations, Frances!) and a nice fellow by the name of Joel Enos will be taking over. I adore Frances so I’m bummed we won’t be working together on BLACK CAT any longer, but I’m happy for her of course, and I look forward to getting to know Joel.
  • SENSUAL PHRASE. Just finished the adaptation of Vol. 16 of 18, which means the series is wrapping up — my final deadline is in mid-June. How long have I been on this property now… Three years, I think? I can’t believe it’ll all be over so soon! (We had an editorial shift on SP recently, too — did I tell you about this? Kit Fox (ed., KAMIKAZE GIRLS) took over for Eric Searleman (ed., SEXY VOICE AND ROBO) Remarkably easy transition. Kit is aces and we already knew each other from a previous project. Eric, who has become a friend over the course of the last three years, has been kind enough to stay in touch.) The end column for Vol. 16 is due the first week in April. Haven’t decided what to write about yet. Hm.
  • KARE FIRST LOVE. Ha! There’s been an editorial shift on KARE, too! (I wonder if I should be taking this personally…?) Andy Nakatani (ed., MONSTER) has taken over for Michelle Pangilinan (ed., MERUPURI). I met Andy last fall when I was in California for the triathlon and was hoping I’d get a chance to work with him, so while I was sorry to see Michelle leave the book, I’m well-pleased to be working with Andy.
  • “ANTHOLOGY.” Turned in my script for an anthology project that I believe is still unannounced, so I’ll keep my mouth shut save but to say that Fraction and I are both participating and we both got fixed up with phenomenal artists. The guy who’s putting this thing together is frighteningly well-connected.
  • NORMAL JEAN. Started scripting a couple of weeks ago. Slow progress as it’s not calendared and it’s hard to make it a priority. I actually need to write to my editor and let him know I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth.
  • SITE REVAMP. I installed WordPress by myself! Okay, well, with some coaching from Casey. But by myself-ish. To be able to do anything with my blog on my own (aside from posting) felt like such a breakthrough that for two days I announced my accomplishment to virtually everyone I met. Or to everyone I met virtually, more accurately. I installed a themes called “zen mininalist” and toyed around with it a bit but now I’m looking to Jean Snow to help make the design a little more interesting. Funny story: I wanted to call the new combined personal/professional blog “girl farts” which I believe horrified Jean. I’ve searched my soul, and I really do just love that name. I think it’s high comedy! And I believe Michel Gondry would have my back on this on. I am not, however, Michel Gondry… So the jury’s still out. (Don’t fret, the domain will remain kellysue.com.) After Jean has had a chance to mess around with the aesthetics, Casey will talk me through the migration. This, too, is Very! Exciting!
  • “PARTNER PROJECT #2.” I had a call Thursday with Sam about a project we want to co-write. Sam is so awesome. So awesome he should be in Tiger Beat.
  • “TYB.” An idea that’s on the back burner for a while. I continue to take notes on it as ideas occur to me, however.
  • TRACERS. I believe this is dead for the time being. If I want to come back to it at some point, the pitch document will have to be expanded.

  • I’m sitting at The Roasterie Cafe working on the NORMAL JEAN script, which is coming along at something even slower than a snail’s pace, I fear. But! Slow progress is still progress. Also? I am hungry. I want to walk over to the Market and pick up some sushi but that would mean giving up my incredibly comfy spot on the couch and — hell no. The cafe is out of fruit cups. Bastards.
  • VERY EXCITING NEW PROJECT came through yesterday. Well… there’s no contract as of yet, but I got the thumb’s up phone call. So that’s awesome. Of course, I can’t say anything about it yet, but be advised: VERY EXCITING NEW PROJECT. Coming right up. (This means that the decision I made Monday to quit pursuing another gig and recommend a friend instead was, in fact, the Right Decision. Woo hoo! All hail winning gambles.)
  • BLACK CAT VOL. 5 and SENSUAL PHRASE VOL. 16 deadlines swiftly approach.

    In no particular order:

  • I have no idea whether or not he reads this log, but in case he does, let me say THANK YOU and WELCOME to John, our [Fraction's and mine] new intern from the Creative Writing Program at KCAI. John’s here once a week for three hours. Thus far he’s done the translations checks on BLACK CAT and KARE FIRST LOVE. (Poor thing.) Yesterday was his birthday. Happy Birthday, John! He’s 21.
  • Turned in a very short piece (4 pages) for an upcoming comics anthology that I don’t think has been announced, so I’ll leave out the particulars for the time being. I spent 3 or 4 days playing narrative Sudoku, attempting to make a La Ronde-style story I’d pitched work and ended up failing miserably. My next attempt — a short piece about two sisters with their savings riding on mid-week race at Belmont Park — also ended in creative abortion. I finally went back to an old script (my first attempt at comic writing, I think), an un-published mini called PERFECT BOUND, and attempted to adapt that. What I ended up with was a piece called TROPICAL BUTTERFLIES ALIVE IN WINTER… and it’s entirely unlike PERFECT BOUND. Funny how that happens.
  • I think I’ve chosen an artist for NORMAL JEAN, though I still need to have him do up a sample page for my publisher/editor and get his approval, which means, of course, that the artist needs some script pages. I thought I’d have something to give him by now, but the burglary and Christmas BURIED me. And, I confess, I lost confidence and enthusiasm for the project there for a while, but I’m all fired up again. I’m working on start scripting on Monday at long last. If I could just get ahead of my deadlines a little! Two near all-nighters this week — one on 2 hours of sleep, one on 3 — I’m too old for this crap. I hope to be caught up by Friday, though. Cross your fingers for me.
  • I had something else to tell you but I’ve forgotten what it was. Lucky you.
